Zeus tank: cleaning and rebuilding it step by step

A Zeus tank that has gone flat on flavour, or that leaves a greasy film on the inside of the glass, is not necessarily finished. In most cases it simply wants a full strip down and a careful rinse. What matters is doing it in the right order, without drowning the one part that must never see water. Here is the whole job, move by move, from unscrewing the base to the first draw after everything goes back together.

Cleaning a Zeus tank: the answer in five moves

A full clean comes down to five operations, and they always run in this order.

1. Empty any remaining e-liquid, then take the tank off the mod.
2. Unscrew the base, pull the coil out and separate the parts one at a time.
3. Rinse the glass, the chimney and the metalwork under warm water, with nothing added.
4. Dry every piece and leave it in the open air until all trace of moisture has gone.
5. Rebuild, fit a primed coil, refill, then wait before the first puff.

The step that makes the difference on this range is number three. The airflow channels start at the top of the atomiser and run back down the sides to the base of the coil, and it is those channels rather than the drip tip that hold the liquid pushed up by condensation. A rinse that skips them leaves the flavour problem exactly where it was.

What to have ready before you strip it down

A clean job needs very little kit, but having it to hand stops you breaking off halfway through with wet fingers and a half unscrewed part sitting on the worktop.

Warm water from the tap, kitchen roll, a dry microfibre cloth and a cotton bud between them cover everything. No washing up liquid and no household alcohol: the silicone seals across the range swell or harden on contact with solvents, and a deformed seal turns into a permanent source of leaks that no amount of tightening will fix.

Lay a sheet of kitchen roll down and work over the top of it. There are not many parts in one of these tanks, but the o-rings are small, dark and inclined to bounce. One lost seal takes the hardware out of service until a spares pack arrives in the post.

Stripping the tank down in the right order

Disassembly runs the same way across the range, from the smallest nano version up to the largest. Swapping two steps around breaks nothing, but it does send e-liquid into the threads, which makes the rebuild sticky and unpleasant.

Take the atomiser off the mod first, then empty the tank through the top fill port by turning it over above a container. British versions of these tanks are supplied in the 2 ml configuration the rules require here, and even that is enough to end up on your fingers if you unscrew the base while it is still full.

Undo the base by hand, never with pliers. On most versions the coil stays attached to the base, so pull it straight out rather than twisting it free. Next comes the central chimney, then the glass or the metal sleeve depending on which model you own.

Line the o-rings up on the kitchen roll in the order you took them off. They are not all the same diameter, and getting two of them the wrong way round shows up as a leak the moment you refill.

Rinsing, then actually drying

The rinse takes a couple of minutes. Drying is the stage everybody cuts short, and it is the one that decides how the tank tastes once it goes back together.

The glass, the chimney, the sleeve, the airflow ring, the drip tip and the metal body all rinse under warm water. Work a damp cotton bud through the inside of the air channels, then rinse again. That is where the sugary deposit from dessert flavours settles and stays.

The coil does not get rinsed, ever. Cotton that has been soaked and dried never recovers its original wicking, and it will hand you a burnt taste on the first draw. If the coil is still young, rest it on kitchen roll away from dust while you work and put it straight back in as it is.

Allow an hour in the open air as a minimum, and longer if the room is damp. A single drop left in an air channel comes back out on the first draw, straight into your mouth. A hairdryer on the cold setting speeds things up without putting the seals at risk.

Rebuilding a Zeus tank without creating a leak

Everything goes back in reverse order, but two moves deserve more attention than the rest: seating the coil and tightening the base at the end.

Present the coil square to the housing and push until you feel firm contact, without forcing it and without letting it start crooked. A thread that has been cross started on one of these tanks is not recoverable: the base never tightens fully again, and liquid finds its way out of the bottom from then on.

Screw the base home by hand and stop there. Over tightening crushes the lower seal, which loses its elasticity and lets liquid past the next time you handle the tank. That is by a distance the most common cause of a leak on a tank that has just been rebuilt.

Priming before the first puff

A new coil is wetted before any use at all. Put a few drops of e-liquid directly onto the cotton ports visible on the side of the coil, until the white of the cotton turns translucent all the way across.

Fill the tank through the top port, keeping clear of the central chimney, then stand the whole thing upright and leave it alone for five to ten minutes. That pause is what lets the cotton draw liquid through its full thickness rather than just the surface.

Start at the bottom of the range printed on the side of the coil, take three or four short draws, then work back towards your usual setting. The Z Series and M Series coils in the range carry that range engraved on the flank, and it is the only figure worth working from.

How often to clean, depending on use

A full rinse earns its place at every coil change, which in practice gives a natural rhythm of somewhere between two and four weeks depending on how much you vape. Between those, a wipe of the airflow ring with a cloth is enough.

A change of flavour forces a clean outside that calendar. Going from a dessert to a menthol without rinsing the glass leaves the previous taste hanging around for several refills. Can it go in the dishwasher?

No. The temperature and the detergent attack the silicone o-rings and dull the finish on coloured versions. Rinsing under warm water remains the only suitable method.

Do the seals need replacing at every clean?

Is the glass replaceable?

Yes, replacement tubes are sold separately for the main models in the range. Check the exact reference of your tank before ordering, because a tube from one model will not sit on another.

Why does the taste stay bad after a full clean?

Because the coil is the culprit rather than the tank. Saturated cotton does not come back: if the flavour is still off after rinsing and drying, the coil has reached the end of its life.

How long can it be left full without vaping?

A few days is fine. Beyond that the cotton keeps wicking and the liquid oxidises slightly in contact with air. For a longer break, empty it and store the tank stripped down.
