Wipe the base and the threads with kitchen roll. Dried liquid on the central contact creates a parasitic resistance that the mod reads as a wrong value, and it accounts for a good share of the error messages people blame on a faulty part.

Present the new coil square to the housing and push until you feel firm contact. On screw in models, turn backwards first until you feel the thread click into place, then tighten: that one move stops you cross threading the base.

Priming, the stage nobody can skip

A new coil heats up with dry cotton if it has not been wetted first. The burnt taste that follows is permanent, and the part is finished before it has done any work at all.

Put a few drops of e-liquid onto each cotton port visible on the flank, until the white turns translucent. Fill the reservoir afterwards, then stand the assembly upright and leave it alone for five to ten minutes.

Start at the bottom of the range engraved on the coil, take three or four short draws, then work back towards your usual setting. That gradual climb spreads liquid through the full thickness of the cotton instead of scorching the outside of it.

Matching the liquid to the coil, within UK rules

Coil and e-liquid are set together, because fitting a low resistance without thinking about the liquid produces an unpleasant vape whatever the quality of the part.

The lower the resistance, the more vapour each draw produces, and the more of everything in the liquid comes with it. British law caps nicotine containing e-liquid at 20 mg per ml, restricts bottles to 10 ml and refillable tanks to 2 ml, and reserves the whole category to adults.
